Halstead District

Halstead is a picturesque Market Town located in countryside on the banks of the River Colne to the North of the County and close to the Suffolk Border. There is a rich history associated with the town and in particular through industries such as Courtauld textiles and the Tortoise Stoves. There is a population of approximately 11,000 served by a range of shops, pubs, restaurants, leisure facilities and many community groups and clubs.
In Halstead we have one Rainbow Unit, two Brownie packs and a Guide Unit.
Both Brownie packs meet for one and quarter hours on a Monday evening.
Girls can join at 7 years old and leave after their 10th birthday whenever they feel ready to move on, some of the girls stay until 10½!
We encourage friendship, learning to work in teams and helping others either within Brownies or other groups outside.
We meet with the other brownie packs in our district at least 3 times a year and there are usually other outside activities which we can take part in for example last year we went bowling, joined in a Safari day and had a Christmas meal at Prezzos.
We are also active members of the community, once a year we attend Remembrance Day parade in the town, sing carols when the Christmas lights are switched on in the park and sometimes travel to the Thinking Day Service in London in February.
We manage to gain many badges incorporating, art/crafts, games and cooking thus giving the girls a whole experience. We also encourage the girls to gain badges through their own interests and use outside assessors.
At present as a pack we are working towards our road safety badge, moving onto the cultural badge and hopefully after Easter when the weather is warmer the gardening badge. We will be inviting external people to come and advise the girls, best techniques, for preparing the ground for growing flowers and vegetables etc.
The Brownies leave our packs confident, responsible, kind, caring and most of all happy girls.
Our Guide unit caters for girls from Halstead and the surrounding villages.
We meet on Thursdays every week during school term time to carry out a number of activities such as badge work, crafts, games and sports, camp songs, walking and cooking. In the Summer months when the weather is good we are able to use a local sports field for sports or even take a walk in the local countryside and along the banks of the river.
We also meet at other times during the year to carry out additional activities both for ourselves and the community.
These include:
- Camping
- Hiking
- Swimming
- Bowling
- Carol Singing
- Church Parades
- Fund Raising
- Remembrance Service
- Tending our allotment
- Working with Halstead in Bloom
