Water Safety Adviser
This role has responsibilities which are specific: to promote and encourage the safe participation in all water activities at County level and within the County.
A County Water Activity Adviser is:
Appointed for an initial term of three years and may be reappointed for a further period of up to two years: this is not automatic and the usual term of appointment is three years.
The Water Activity Adviser is part of the County Outdoor Team and as such reports directly to the County Outdoor Activities Adviser.
The Water Activity Adviser should:
Be an enthusiast for water activities, participating if possible. Understand their value as an integral part of the Guiding programme.
Functions can include:
- Being an active member of the County outdoor team and represent all aspects of water activities and water safety in the County. Act as Adviser to the County Outdoor Activities Adviser on all matters relevant to water activities/safety
- Attend meetings as appropriate. Keep record of notes received from those meetings. Receive and disseminate information received to the County
- Ensure that safety standards for all water activities and events are maintained. Promote activities and events at County level and within the programme for the girls. Be a point of reference for Division Commissioners, Advisers and Guiders in the County
- Assess qualifications, certificates and interest badges for water activities\safety or delegate the assessment to experts. Be involved with the training sessions for the relevant clauses of the Queens Guide Award
- Act as a point of reference for Division Advisers and other Guiders in the County with regard to forms
- Present a written report to the County Outdoor Activities Adviser which will be collated into the full outdoor team report for the County Commissioner
- Keep-up-to-date with training sessions, events and developments, both within and outside Girlguiding UK relevant to water activities/safety
- Be aware of all relevant issues surrounding the requirements for safety by those taking part in any water based activities. This can include either having personal knowledge or access to information regarding for instance water classifications, qualifications required by instructors and any other matters which are required by a risk assessment for a proposed activity
- Keep up-to-date with all publications and new resources, including those published by Girlguiding UK (e.g. Guiding Manual) and those concerned with your specialism
Please note: No-one is expected to have all of these skills at the outset as, many of these skills and qualities will be acquired and developed throughout the appointment term.
