Special Needs Adviser

A Special Needs Adviser is:

Appointed for an initial term of three years and may be reappointed for a further period of up to two years; this is not automatic and the usual term of appointment is three years.

This role can be shared.

Functions can include:
  • Maintaining relationships throughout the County
  • Promoting the ethos of Guiding throughout the County
  • Keeping in touch with units who have members who are deaf, some who cannot see and those that suffer from Downs Syndrome, Epilepsy, Diabetes and Attention Deficit Disorder to name a few.
  • Assisting unit guiders with the programme provision for these special unit members
  • Keeping records of all special unit members attending residential events.
  • Suggesting precautions and providing information to enable a residential event to run smoothly and above all safely for all the unit members attending.
  • Provision of information on various medical conditions, which will assist the Guider should a unit member have a epileptic episode or suffer from another condition.
  • Provision, upon request, at unit meetings, of cap-handi activities for the unit members to take part in.
  • Provision of assistance with specific problems using resources available to this role.
The Special Needs Adviser should:
  • Be in sympathy with the aims and principles of The Guide Association
  • Be a good communicator. Be a good listener. Be enthusiastic.
  • Be confident. Have tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Have a sense of humour.
  • Have patience and understanding. Understand confidentiality of personal information.

Please note: No-one is expected to have all of these skills at the outset as, many of these skills and qualities will be acquired and developed throughout the appointment term.
