Boating Adviser

This role has responsibilities which are specific: to promote and encourage the safe participation in all boating activities at County level and within the County.

A County Boating Adviser is:

Appointed for an initial term of three years and may be reappointed for a further period of up to two years: this is not automatic and the usual term of appointment is three years.

The Boating Adviser is part of the County Outdoor Team and as such reports directly to the County Outdoor Activities Adviser.

The Boating Adviser should:

Be an enthusiast for boating activities, participating if possible. Understand their value as an integral part of the Guiding programme. Preferably have the appropriate nationally recognised qualification to teach at least one form of boating activity.

Functions can include:

  • Being an active member of the County outdoor team and represent all aspects of boating activities in the County. Act as Adviser to the County Outdoor Activities Adviser on all matters relevant to boating activities\safety
  • Attend meetings as appropriate. Keep record of notes received from those meetings. Receive and disseminate information received to the County
  • Ensure that safety standards for all boating activities and events are maintained. Promote activities and events at County level and within the programme for the girls. Be a point of reference for Division Commissioners, Advisers and Guiders in the County
  • Assess qualifications, certificates and interest badges for boating activities\safety or delegate the assessment to experts. Be involved with the training sessions for any relevant clauses of the Queens Guide Award
  • Act as a point of reference for Division Advisers and other Guiders in the County with regard to forms
  • Present a written report to the County Outdoor Activities Adviser which will be collated into the full outdoor team report for the County Commissioner
  • Keep-up-to-date with training sessions, events and developments, both within and outside Girlguiding UK relevant to boating activities\safety
  • Be aware of all relevant issues surrounding the requirements for safety by those taking part in any boating activities. This can include either having personal knowledge or access to information regarding for instance water classifications, qualifications required by instructors and any other matters which are required by a risk assessment for a proposed activity
  • Be prepared to investigate sources for as many venues for the following – canoeing, kayaking, dragon boating, sailing, boardsailing, canal boating and any other boating activities available in Essex and the surrounding areas
  • Be aware of instructors, or research the provision of, appropriate instructors with qualifications to enable access to any or all of the boating activities mentioned above
  • Keep up-to-date with all publications and new resources, including those published by Girlguiding UK (e.g. Guiding Manual) and those concerned with your specialism
Please note: No-one is expected to have all of these skills at the outset as, many of these skills and qualities will be acquired and developed throughout the appointment term.
