Arts Adviser

An Arts Adviser is:  

Appointed for an initial term of three years and may be reappointed for a further period of up to two years; this is not automatic and the usual term of appointment is three  years.

This role can be shared.

Functions can include:
  • With the County Commissioner, creating a County arts team if required. 
  • Acting as Adviser to the County Commissioner over aspects of the arts.
  • Together with the County Guiding Development team ensuring that the arts are encouraged within the programme, through training sessions, events and projects. This will often be done by attending Guiding Development meetings within the County and/or being involved in trainings at County level.
  • Attending appropriate meetings by invitation or request.
  • Keeping the minutes of Arts team and other meetings. Receiving and disseminating information through the appropriate channels.
  • Providing accurate information and help for Commissioners and Guiders especially with regard to interest badges and certificates.
  • Enabling assessment for specific clauses concerned with the arts in the Queen's Guide Award. Advising those participants working on the Award.
  • Finding testers for the Guide Association music qualifications. Being involved in the assessment or delegate the responsibility to a suitable person. Encouraging Guiders to become involved in training sessions and singing circles for the Association music qualifications. Understanding the need for forms and how they are used. Know which forms are needed for which activities and where to obtain them.
  • Keeping abreast of developments in the creative arts; liasing with outside bodies, experts and specialist societies to encourage and helping with the training sessions and programme developments within the Association.
  • Liasing with the Scout Association if appropriate, where mixed artistic activities are concerned for example: Scout and Guide bands, orchestras, shows (or delegate if appropriate).
  • Keeping up-to-date with all publications and new resources, including those published by The Guide Association and those concerning your specialism.
  • Writing an annual report for the County Commissioner with a copy for the Country/Region Adviser.
  • Ensuring the Arts Adviser pages of the County website are updated as and when required.
The Arts Adviser should:
  • Promote all aspects of the creative arts as an integral part of the programme at County level.
  • Be enthusiastic for a whole range of creative interests, and possibly be a specialist in one or more. If required have the assistance of a team of specialists to enable their expertise to be used within the County, for example, drama, dance, music and home arts.
  • Understand the important place of creative arts within the Guiding Programme.
  • Be in sympathy with the aims and principles of The Guide Association

Please note: No-one is expected to have all of these skills at the outset as, many of these skills and qualities will be acquired and developed throughout the appointment term.
